02 Apr How to Get the Most out of Your Roof
Most homeowners are aware that clogged gutters can lead to damaged siding and flooded basements. However, most homeowners are unaware that a clogged gutter can also damage their roofs. When the gutters get clogged with debris, a big rainstorm can cause water to actually backflow out of the gutters onto the roof. This backflow can rot your roofing materials in a hurry. To prevent this, make sure you regularly clean your gutters to keep them free of debris. At a minimum, you should clean your gutters every fall and spring.
Keep Your Roof Free of Leaves
Another issue that can plague roofs is the accumulation of dead leaves. If you have an adequate slope on your peaked roof, this likely will not be an issue. However, even a peaked roof can build up piles of leaves if there are large trees that overhang it. If you notice that your roof tends to accumulate leaves, make sure that you remove them whenever you see them piling up. Leaf piles on the roof can trap moisture and quickly rot your roof if they are left to sit.
Remove the Moss
Many homeowners will notice that they have black algae on their roofs. If you notice it on your roof, you don’t need to worry about it. Although it may be unsightly, black algae pose no harm to your roof. However, the same cannot be said of moss. If you notice green moss on your roof, you need to remove it as soon as possible. If you get to it early, you can simply sweep the moss right off the roof. If you wait, you will have to use a cleaning product that is designed to kill moss to get rid of it.
Remove Overhanging Limbs
Limbs that hang over your roof present two dangers. The first is that a storm could knock them off the tree, causing severe damage when they fall on your roof. The other danger is that overhanging limbs provide easy access for squirrels and rodents. These critters can gnaw holes in your roof and siding. You should trim back all branches so that they are at least 10 feet away from your roof.
If you follow these maintenance tips from Quality Discount Roofing, your roofing should stay in good shape for its maximum lifespan. Make sure to inspect your roof once a month to ensure it is in good condition. You should also inspect it after every big storm to make sure no damage has occurred from the weather.
