A Guide to Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber Cement Siding

Before you start  your project, make sure that you are choosing the right product. .

Property investments are a big deal, which is why people search for the best—may it be for residential or commercial. It is only wise for homeowners to invest in long-lasting materials to avoid losing what you invest. Most of the houses today look for quality siding that offers more than just curb appeal. But what really makes up a good wall siding?

Fiber Cement Wall Siding: Everything You Need to Know

One of the most recommended materials for siding is Fiber Cement. It is a durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance material used in residential or even commercial projects. Fiber Cement is a semi-rigid material that provides substantial protection, maintaining its flexibility. The Fiber Cement material comprises the following ingredients: Portland cement, sand, water, and cellulose fibers.

Fiber Cement and Asbestos

By definition, Asbestos is known as a heat-resistant fibrous silicate mineral possibly woven in fabrics. It is used mostly in fire-resistant and insulating materials like brake linings. However, there are health concerns when it comes to asbestos and there are claims that Fiber Cement contains Asbestos

It is a concern for everyone that this asbestos can be harmful due to dust produced by power saws or similar cutting operations in the modern material. People can be sure that there are no Fiber Cement products sold in North America that contain Asbestos.

For over 60 years, modern Fiber Cement siding building cladding has been in the industry. Including its earlier form, cement asbestos shingles are a part of this more than a 60-year mark. The developing concern for asbestos safety continues the production of fiber cement shingles, depleting the use and reinforcement of materials like asbestos.

Fiber Cement Siding Performance

When it comes to performance Fiber Cement will not disappoint. There are many synthetic alternatives to wood siding that have fallen short on either durability or aesthetics. Although modern fiber cement siding can outperform other materials like hardboard siding, it is still susceptible to mechanical damage, coating or paint failures, and a shrinkage and siding butt-joint cosmetic or leak issue.

Unlike the earliest forms of shingles, Fiber Cement is considered the newest material in the exterior field. It holds a reputation that can be fashioned to resemble any exterior cladding, holds paint well, and is not susceptible to insects, decay, UV radiation, and fire. The older types of Fiber Cement, however, are not as good as the new ones. They are usually vulnerable to impact damage. Frequent repairs with care is a must to avoid breaking and removing additional shingles.

Fiber Cement Characteristics

Fiber Cement wall siding typically weighs around 20 pounds and measures 12-foot length by 8 ¼ inches. They are straight and rigid edgewise. This type of siding also has a flexible characteristic along the flat dimension. But in a wavy framing job, it tends to telegraph through the siding.

All Fiber Cement materials are fairly brittle. If not handled well, it can easily crack or break. Contractors find it necessary to pick up long lap siding boards parallel to the ground. Moreover, carrying a long Fiber Cement board flatly risks breakage.

Fiber Cement: Styles and Sizes

Depending on the exterior choice, different sizes and styles of Fiber Cement siding can best fit your home or building. Many choices are available, ranging from horizontal wood siding to vertical sidings, wood shacks, bricks, and stones. Generally, wood patterns have smooth or wood-grained textures available. Most of it is available factory-primed, finished, or even unfinished.

Fiber Cement horizontal siding planks are typically 5 ¼ to 12 ¼ inches wide by 12-ft long and are designed for a 1 ½ inch overlap. The vertical siding panels measure at 4×8, 4×9, or 4×10 ft, while shake and shingle panels are 16×48 inches. Most siding materials are 1-5 inches thick. Lastly, the Fiber Cement soffit material is ¼ inch long, and most of the trim stock is 7/16 inch thick. However, manufacturers recently introduced thicker profiles.
