Asphalt shingles burst into the scene during the turn of the 20th century. It has come a long way. In the United States, over 70 to 80 percent of the population uses asphalt shingles, and it has now spread to numerous countries around the world.

It comes as no surprise that these roofing types will become popular to homeowners or even commercial building owners. Asphalt roof shingles have an attractive and versatile physique. It also has wind resistance and high fire feature, making it the best roofing choice

Features of Asphalt Shingles

When it comes to pricing, shingles are cost-effective. Compared to other types of roofs, shingles cost less plus it also scores points when it comes to aesthetics and durability. In addition to its features, this type of roof is easy to install, requiring minimal maintenance. Asphalt roof shingles’ basic life expectancy would run from 15 to 20 years, while fiberglass shingles can last from 20 to 30 years.

What Are the Types of Shingle Roofs?

If you are on the lookout for shingle roofs, here is what you need to know about the different types of shingles.

Fiberglass Shingles

It was in the 1950s when fiberglass type of shingles became popular. Compared to organic shingles, fiberglass asphalt shingles have a base mat covered and saturated by flexible asphalt. Fiberglass types are also surfaced with mineral granules.

Fiberglass shingles contain more asphalt than organic shingles. It has less weight and thickness compared to a cellulose fiber mat. Fiberglass types are less likely to soak the water up from underneath, resulting in curling up from the bottom.

Asphalt Shingles Deck Requirements

Installation of asphalt shingles is done over a solid roof deck. The slope must range from 3 in 12 through 21 in 12 roof pitch to proceed with the standard installation method. Asphalt shingles, in the range of 2 in 12, flat, and 21 in 12 steeper in nature, can also be used on slopes. However, special application procedures are a must, such as self-adhesive underlayment.

Types of Asphalt Shingles for Construction

There are two types of asphalt shingles used mainly for roof construction:

3-tab Shingles

It has two slots dividing the exposed part of the shingle into three.

Laminated Shingles/Architectural and Dimensional Shingles

Often used in wide ranges, these laminated shingles have two layers that are thicker and more wind resistant.

Owens Corning Shingles

When it comes to shingles, Owens Corning is one of the most trusted brands out there. Professional roofers like Quality Discount Roofing & Construction rely on Owens Corning shingles.

They produce produces 7 different shingle lines. Each is available in 4 to 14 colors, but there are slightly different color choices by area. They have certified contractors to ensure that your shingles will be installed properly.

Oakridge vs. Duration Shingles

The Oakridge Shingles from Owens Corning provide premium security and awesome curb appeal. The Duration Shingles are formulated on a TruDefinition color platform. They offer a wide selection of colors. It also uses the SureNail Technology for good holding strength.

3-Tab vs. Architectural Shingles

There are different types of shingles that you need to choose from. For example, you may have to choose between 3-tab and architectural shingles.

3-tab shingles are by far the most cost-effective shingle solution for roofs. They can also provide a uniform look to your entire roof. The problem with 3-tab shingles is not that resistant to extreme weather.

Architectural shingles on the other hand are heavier and so they provide better resistance to strong winds. The only problem is that these types of shingles are not resistant to heavy hail.

How to Repair Asphalt Shingles?

Although it has a durable quality that can last for how many years, repairs are still inevitable. Shingles are often available from the market in the form of strips. They are all laid over concrete decks or boards then pressed using nails.

It is vital to understand the proper alignment of strips that fill up the roof systematically, leaving little to no gaps and spaces. Moreover, a missing shingle may often result in leaks or worn outs. Installation of roof vent or plumbing vent may have also caused the disturbance of shingles.

Removal of shingles is best done when they are in a cool state. It makes the adhesive beneath the layer brittle and easier to remove. When you remove it during hot conditions, it may only cause the shingle to tear off.
